Ida Rak was amazed by the wide availability of inexpensive clothing, shoes, and bags in California’s many secondhand shops. The Israel artist hadn’t seen prices this low before and was so delighted that she purchases a handful of items on a whim.

Sullivan Seed Beads

Teresa Sullivan can make seed beads laugh, cry, dance, and defy gravity. Drawing from influences as diverse as William S Burroughs, African art, and Kustom Kar Kulture, Sullivan meticulously stitches tiny breads together to create flat tapestries and freestanding, 3-dimensional forms. All of her work is made with thread and beads alone, there are no armatures anywhere, and even no glue.
The Portland, Ore., artist began with beaded jewelry, but had creative epiphany in 1994 when a friend loaned her a pair of seed beaded portrait earrings made by Baltimore, Md., bead artist Joyce Scott.
“When I saw what graphic power these earrings had, I became really excited about this medium,†says Sullivan. “I realized that beads could become a vehicle for storytelling.†Read the rest of this entry »

Nearly 100 years after Duchamp’s Fountain Moriyasu (a graduate of University of Washington’s Ceramic & Metal program) meditates on this age old conundrum through small scale clay sculptures that question of the nature of utility.
Lamplight Lavis Gathering, her 2005 2005 exhibition directly addresses the matter through an assortment of fanciful, functional table lamps. The exhibit also marked the first time she combined display element with her work. Lamps were stacked on specially commissioned table, giving the installation the appearance of a furniture showroom.

Mask of Klana is an exotic art craft from Indonesia, its popular known as Klana Topeng. Klana topeng also the name of a dance with tells the story of a king from Bentar Angin, Klana Sewandana, who falls in love with Dewi Sekartaji, the daughter of a king from Kediri. Because of his love, Klana loses control and behaves in a crazy manner. The dance represents the actions of flirting, dressing up and parading back and forth in front of the mirror. It is as if Klana was facing Dewi Sekartaji, but in reality he is only facing himself.
The dance of Klana topeng also has a philosophical side. Klana Sewandana symbolizes a king having a devil, like character, which will be defeated by another character having a holy attitude.
